ROME (Sputnik) – As Italy is celebrating the 70th anniversary of liberation from Nazi Germany, Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella said on Saturday that ideals of fight against Fascism that constituted nation’s ethical foundation.

“We should never forget moral uprising of our people against the errors of war, inhuman violence of Nazism and Fascism, oppression from the authoritarian regime. We are talking about ethical foundation ingrained in our nation,” Mattarella said.

In Trieste, local authorities as well as Russian, Belarusian, Kazakh diplomats paid tribute to the fighters of the so-called Russian battalion, who fought alongside Italians against Nazi occupation.

On April 25, the resistance fighters liberated Milan and Turin. This day was celebrated as a national holiday for the first time in 1946, and was declared an official holiday for the whole country three years later.
