MANAMA (Sputnik) — The ministry added some of the suspects had previously been charged with terrorism in absentia in a Bahraini court, which sentenced them to life in jail. They were also allegedly implicated in several cases of plotting terror attacks to destabilize the situation in Bahrain.
"The special operation, which was a coordinated effort by the kingdom's different investigative authorities, has succeeded in arresting 28 suspects involved in terrorist activities, and foiled a series of terror attacks that were planned in several settlements," the ministry's press office told RIA Novosti.
Bahrain has been in turmoil since a wave of "Arab Spring" uprisings swept the Middle East in 2011. Since then, the monarchy's minority Sunni leadership has been struggling to contain the Shiite opposition, organizing brutal crackdowns on opposition groups and individuals.
