On Tuesday a week-long citywide emergency curfew was declared in Baltimore, Maryland. Citizens are required to stay in from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. On the first night, some 200 people gathered in downtown Baltimore, refusing to follow the curfew and clashed with police. Police used tear gas, smoke and pepper balls to disperse the crowd.
"Baltimore police have made 10 arrests since the 10 p.m. curfew went into effect Tuesday night," Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said, quoted by CNN.
According to Batts, two people of the ten were arrested for looting, one for disorderly conduct and the rest for violating the curfew. He added that the curfew is working and the city is now "stable."
The curfew was established following violent riots and looting on Monday that took place after the burial of Freddie Gray — a 25-year old African-American, who died on April 19 as a result of spinal injuries received in unexplained circumstances while in custody.
