MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian energy giant Gazprom has confirmed it has received $40 million from Ukraine's Naftogaz as a prepayment for Russian gas deliveries, a source in Gazprom told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
"We received $40 million," the source said.
Earlier in the day, Naftogaz said the company had transferred $40 million to Gazprom.
In summer 2014, Gazprom switched Ukraine to a prepayment system for gas deliveries over Kiev's outstanding gas debt of more than $5 billion.
In October 2014, Moscow and Kiev signed the "winter package" agreement, providing Ukraine with gas supplies until the end of March with a $100-discount per 1,000 cubic meters. On March 31, Moscow extended the deal for the second quarter of 2015.
In March, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Naftogaz owed Russia $2.4 billion for 2014 gas deliveries and in nonpayment penalties.
