Hydraulic fracking is a technique that uses high-pressure injection of water, sand and toxic chemicals to extract oil and natural gas from underground shale formations.
Environmentalists oppose fracking since it causes chemical contamination of water, methane pollution and earthquakes. Proponents of fracking argue the practice boosts the economy and has made the United States the world’s top oil-producer.
