The United States should provide Ukraine with defensive lethal weapons, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Supreme Allied Commander General Philip Breedlove said in a briefing on Thursday asking to disregard his earlier statement about sending offensive weapons to Kiev.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Thursday, Breedlove said providing offensive weapons should be a component in the US approach to establishing peace in Ukraine.

“I used those words and didn’t even know I used them. What we are talking about… is defensive lethal weapons.”

US President Barack Obama has so far shied away from providing lethal assistance to Ukraine, arguing that any lethal assistance could lead to greater bloodshed and escalation of the conflict.

“It is just a fighter pilot doing two and a half plus hours’ worth of the testimony in front of the Senate,” Breedlove said explaining his earlier statement at the US Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Later on, Breedlove underscored that there has been no changes in the US policy towards the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
