Russia's Southern Military District plans to conduct more than 25 assault aircraft drills this year, its press service said Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Crews will participate in tactical war games and maneuvers alongside combined armed forces from the same military district.

"A total of more than 25 exercises of various scale, involving assault aircraft crews from the Southern Military District's airbase in the country's south, will be held in 2015," the statement said.

The Southern Military District is one of the four operational strategic commands of the Russian armed forces. It covers the turbulent North Caucasus region that has been plagued by terrorist attacks over the past decade.

In late April, some 600 Russian marines from the Caspian Flotilla held tactical exercises in North Caucasus area of Dagestan.

Earlier this year, the Russian Defense Ministry announced plans to conduct at least 4,000 military exercises throughout the country in 2015.
