MOSCOW, May 2 (Sputnik) — Afghanistan is suffering from the activity of the Taliban, a militant group formed in the 1990s, seeking to establish sharia law in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and from smaller insurgent groups. The Taliban is known to have been behind numerous deadly terror attacks in both countries.
"At least 57 armed members of the Taliban were killed, 35 injured, two militants were detained by the national security forces of Afghanistan," the ministry's statement said.
According to the ministry, the forces also managed to defuse seven improvised explosive devices and detect and remove the light and heavy weapons.
Last week, some 40 Taliban militants, including foreign nationals, were killed by Afghan national security forces in northern Afghanistan.
The Taliban has boosted its operations in Afghanistan after NATO ended its International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in late 2014 and launched a non-combat mission in the country.
