A pertinent bill President Bronislaw Komorowski signed into law on Monday will take effect two weeks after publication and may then be ratified by the head of state.
The brigade, designated as LitPolUkrBrig, will be used in UN, NATO and EU-sponsored peacekeeping operations. It is being set up to bolster regional defense cooperation and to help Ukraine build capable armed forces.
The brigade will be headquartered in Lublin, the ministry statement said.
Work to establish a joint Polish-Ukrainian-Lithuanian brigade started back in 2007 as part of three-way meetings between the countries’ defense ministers who eventually signed a pertinent agreement in September 2009.
