Anti-submarine warfare exercises started in Norway on May 4 with military forces from ten NATO member countries and Sweden taking part in the maneuvers.
The exercises are expected to last until May 13 and involve more than a dozen warships and submarines, as well as planes and helicopters. Photos of the first maneuvers were released on the Facebook page of NATO Maritime Command.

The training is aimed at detecting and destroying submarines and suspicious "underwater objects". According to a statement on its website, NATO will practice anti-submarine warfare in the air, on the surface and underwater.
The exercise started shortly after a new wave of paranoia about “Russian submarines”, which began in late April, when Finland allegedly discovered an unidentified underwater object in its territorial waters.
In October 2014 a similar situation occurred in Sweden. In reference to the Finnish case, Swedish retired submarine forces commander Goran Frisk laid the blame on “Russians”.
