The collapse affected the lava lake that has recently filled the Overlook crater to its brim, reaching the highest level in history. A similar lake previously formed in this area more than three decades ago, in 1974.

Earlier on Sunday, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck the upper east rift zone shaking villages located near the volcano.

Kilauea, estimated to be up to 600,000 years old, is considered the most active volcano in the world, according to the US Geological Survey. Its most recent eruption took place on January 3, 1983, and is still ongoing.

According to local legend, Kilauea is home to the fire goddess Pele, who is said to have created the Hawaiian Islands.
