MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The United States, Mexico and three other Central American states intend to press on with energy integration within the framework of the World Economic Forum on Latin America, Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade has announced.
The forum, kicking off Wednesday in the resort district of Riviera Maya along the Caribbean Sea, hosts over 500 global companies, five of the region's heads of states, and 20 ministers from 11 nations.
The new pipeline is expected to link the Mexican port town of Salina Cruz with Guatemala's Escuintla department, spanning 260 miles of Mexican and 111 miles of Guatemalan soil. Although the date of construction has not yet been announced, earlier reports suggested the pipeline is expected to be commissioned next year.
Guatemalan Minister of Economy Sergio de la Torre has stated earlier that Russia's Gazprom is among US, Chinese and Spanish energy companies vying to take part in the pipeline's construction.
