LUGANSK (Sputnik) – US President Barack Obama has been invited by the administration of the Lugansk People's Republic's (LPR) to attend celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, deputy commander of the LPR militia Vitaly Kiselyov said Thursday.

"We have sent out email invitations – and given them out personally – to several international organizations, including the OSCE [the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe], the Red Cross, the UN. We have invited Barack Obama, among others. Let them come and see," Kiselyov told RIA Novosti.

He said the LPR had invited foreign guests so that they could see there were no "gangs" operating in the region, and no one was "eating children," as some media reports have suggested.

"[Here there are] hardworking people that, just like 70 years ago, are defending their right to freedom," Kiselyov said.

In 2014, Lugansk, as well as Donetsk, declared the establishment of self-proclaimed republics, independent from Ukraine. The West refused to recognize the legitimacy of these declarations and backed the central Kiev government which launched a special operation against the independence supporters.

On May 9, Russia and other former Soviet Union states will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany.
