“I trust an agreement will be in the offing in the next few days, or weeks,” Varoufakis said at a business conference in Brussels as quoted by The Guardian.
Varoufakis also said that in order to prevent excessive borrowing in the future, a so-called “debt brake” could be imposed.
The Greek government is currently negotiating the new bailout deal with the Troika of creditors comprising the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Commission and the European Central Bank, over another portion of financial aid as part of the $270-billion rescue package.
By May 12, Greece is expected to repay 750 million euros ($845 million) to the IMF. However, there are fears that Athens would struggle to make the installment.
The current aid package for Greece expires in the end of June.
