ATHENS (Sputnik) — Greece will transfer the €750-million ($844-million) payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on May 12, as agreed earlier, despite fears that Athens would not have enough funds for the transaction, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said Thursday.
“Athens want to pay and will pay the IMF,” Varoufakis said at a business conference in Brussells, as quoted by Greek media.
The upcoming repayment is another portion of the $270-billion Greek debt to the troika of international creditors, comprising the IMF, the European Commission and the European Central Bank.
Earlier on Thursday, Varoufakis said that the parties, currently negotiating a new bailout deal, may reach an agreement on additional financial aid in the next few days.
The current aid package for Greece expires at the end of June, after a four-month extension.
