UKIP has secured its first seat in the British Parliament thanks to the victory of Douglass Carswell, who came first in the Clacton constituency.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — UK Independence Party (UKIP) has secured its first seat in the British Parliament thanks to the victory of Douglass Carswell, who came first in the Clacton constituency with 19,642 votes.

"As a UKIP MP I will work with anyone on any side of the political spectrum who is serious about real political reform," Carswell stressed.

According to exit poll results released immediately after the voting stopped in the Thursday general election in the United Kingdom, UKIP secured only 2 seats.

Meanwhile Conservatives had the lead with 316 seats, 77 more than the Labour Party has secured, the poll showed.

Millions of Britons cast their ballots to choose 650 parliamentarians on Thursday. The new members of the House of Commons will serve until 2020.

This general election is considered to be the most closely-contested in decades as the country's two biggest parties – the Conservatives led by British Prime Minister David Cameron and the Labour led by Ed Miliband – were evenly poised by poll trackers at around 34 percent of votes each prior to the election day.

UKIP, which won more votes than any other British party in the 2014 European Parliament elections, was polling third ahead of the elections.

In the absence of a clear leader, the three possible outcomes of the UK general election are a formal coalition, a so-called confidence and supply agreement between the parties, or cooperation on a vote-by-vote basis.

So far, all parties have spoken against entering into a formal coalition.
