Speaking with residents of the small, northeastern town of Liptovsky Mikulas on Friday in a celebration of the end of the Second World War in Europe, Fico stated that he "will go to Moscow, even if some journalists do a headstand over it," Slovakian news hub Teraz reports.
Meeting with applause from the town's residents, Fico noted that he also plans to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, "on behalf of the entire Slovak Republic."
The prime minister added that he considers his opponents' politicization of the victory celebrations to be inappropriate, noting that "by doing so, we insult the memory of those who died 70 years ago in the liberation of our country."
