MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) — Vice President of Uruguay Raul Fernando Sendic Rodriguez said Friday that he admires the role Russian people and people of the other Soviet Union member states played in the defeat of German Nazism.
"Seventy years ago, Russian people and the people of the USSR [republics] have played a very important role in the defeat of Nazism – one of the most terrible tragedies the humanity has ever survived," Sendic told RIA Novosti.
"I studied the history of that time thoroughly – the part of the truly heroic history of Russian people. And I admire this feat that cost enormous number of lives," Sendic said.
On Friday, Sendic attended a reception organized by Russian Embassy in Montevideo to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory over German Fascism. Earlier the same day, Uruguyan newspaper El Observador published opinion pieces by Russian Ambassador to Uruguay Alexei Labetsky devoted to the WWII Victory.
Earlier, two photo exhibitions dedicated to the Victory in World War II have opened in Montevideo and southwestern Uruguayan city of Carmelo.
