MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The members of EDL staged a protest against perceived "Islamist threat" in Walthamstow, the district they claim has become an "Islamist Bandit Country."
However, hundreds took to the streets in a counter-demonstration, organized by the Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and We Are Waltham Forest movements.
A number of Twitter users, present at the site, reported that several anti-EDL activists have been arrested. According to Trending-UK.com website, #walthamstow is currently the third among the top trending hashtags in Britain.
Earlier this week, the Metropolitan police announced plans earlier this week to impose restrictions on the protesters to prevent violence between the two groups, including instructions to have separate marching routes.
In 2012, the similar event took place in Walthamstow, also resulting in several arrests, according to the London Evening Standard.
