The Sinai Tribal Federation, comprising some 30 tribes based in the peninsula, pledged to assist the Egyptian security forces in their fight against terrorism and Islamist insurgency in the region plagued by violence since 2013.
The tribes are resolved to tackle the deadliest group in the Sinai, affiliated with the Islamic State, among other militants. Sinai Province, previously known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (ABM), claimed responsibility for numerous attacks against Egyptian soldiers.
The tribes announced that they would form two volunteer groups. One will fight along the security forces, while the other one will focus on collecting information on suspected militants and their supporters.
