MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The remarks were made in the framework of the Universal Periodic Review, a discussion on UN member states’ human rights situation that takes place every four years.
Among the delegates expressing concern over racial discrimination by US police were envoys from Mexico, Bolivia, China and Japan, as well as numerous African countries.
“We hope that proactive measures will be swiftly taken to further address racial discrimination,” Japan’s representative said, while Bolivia noted the “disproportional use of lethal force against persons of color.”
Russia also addressed the situation, calling on the United States to investigate all cases of police arbitrariness, including torture and murders.
In addition, Washington was repeatedly urged to ratify more human rights documents, and to establish a national human rights institution that would monitor the situation.
