Measures Taken to Clean Oil Spill in Hudson River After Nuclear Plant Fire

Measures have been taken to clean oil that leaked to the Hudson River and to prevent further spills after the fire at the Indian Point nuclear power plant, Neil Sheehan, Public Affairs Officer at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), told Sputnik on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Anastasia Levchenko — On Saturday, a transformer at the nuclear plant exploded, caught fire and discharged oil, which leaked into the river with storm drains. The facility was shut down shortly.

It is still unknown how big the oil spill is, Sheehan said.

"The company [Entergy, which owns and operates Indian Point] is still calculating the amount of oil that reached the river. The company did install sandbags around storm drains to prevent oil from reaching the river. It has also brought in an environmental contractor to work on cleaning up any oil that ended up in the river," Sheehan told Sputnik.

The NRC officer excluded any possibility of a radioactive leak, because the reactor was safely shut down.
