WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Smith’s father, Chief Wayne County Circuit Judge Virgil Smith, would not comment on the allegations, according to local media, and Smith could appear in court as early as next Monday.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said police will seek charges of aggravated assault with a gun and malicious destruction of property against Smith.
“We interviewed and subsequently placed him [Smith] under arrest,” Craig was quoted as saying by local media. “We do know there were shots fired. However, I cannot and will not say they were fired by the senator. It appears ten rounds were fired.”
An individual called the Detroit police past midnight on Sunday saying they heard shots outside Smith’s home, according to local media. The police arrived shortly but found Smith was not on the scene and noted that a 2015 Mercedes-Benz, which belonged to Smith’s girlfriend and ex-wife, shot up once.
Smith represents the 4th Senate District of Michigan from Detroit’s north side to Detroit’s south side. He was re-elected in 2014 to another four-year term after defeating former State Representative Rashida Tlaib. Smith had been arrested in the past in 2000 and 2004, while he operated a vehicle intoxicated.
