Swedish prosecutors are now preparing to interview founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange in London after his appeal against the detention order was rejected by the Supreme Court, Assange’s lawyer told Sputnik Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — Sweden’s high court ruled on Monday to uphold the arrest warrant in an inquiry of alleged sexual misconduct.

“We hoped that the Supreme Court would have overruled the decision about the custody,” Thomas Olsson said. “But the prosecutor has now started to prepare for the interview in London, they will wait and see what it will lead to.”

The date of the interview has not been specified yet and depends on the prosecutors, according to Olsson.

“That depends on the prosecutors because they need to make a request to the authorities in the Great Britain, and in Ecuador, so it is in their hands, we don’t have any impact on that,” he told Sputnik.

Sweden's Supreme Court Upholds Detention Warrant for Assange - Reports
Assange’s defense has previously stressed that the arrest warrant, which restricts the WikiLeaks founder’s freedom, should be lifted as prosecutors have failed to move the case forward.

In March, Sweden's Prosecution Authority said it had made a request to question Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy, where he has been staying since 2012. They have previously refused the idea, claiming that this would be counterproductive.

Assange, an Australian national, has been wanted for alleged sexual assault in Sweden since 2010. He has denied the claims and is currently staying at the Ecuadorean embassy in central London, facing detention and extradition to Sweden if he steps outside.
