WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to the earlier media reports, eight of ten cars of an Amtrak train traveling from Washington to New York derailed on Tuesday night in northern part of Philadelphia, injuring at least 50 passengers.
At least five people have died in Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia, mayor Michael Nutter said.
"Unfortunately, we can confirm at least five individuals deceased," Nutter said.
The mayor noted that "the train's seven cars including the engine, are in various stages of disarray, turned over, upside down on their side."
Nutter underscored that the reasons behind the accident remain unknown, adding that a total of 200 rescuers are operating at the crash scene.
"It is an absolute disastrous mess. I've never seen anything like this in my life."
The train was traveling from Washington, D.C. to New York City and carried a total of 240 passengers

The train was carrying a total 238 passengers and 5 crew members on board.Amtrak said anyone with love ones who may have been on the train can call 1-800-523-9101 for information. Service between Philadelphia and New York is suspended.

Former Congressman Patrick Murphy was on the train and says he has been helping people. He has been tweeting photos of firefighters helping people in the wreckage. "Pray for those injured," he said.
