CAIRO (Sputnik) – Hosni Mubarak, a former longtime president of Egypt, was released from custody Wednesday after his pre-trial detention time was counted as already served, the country’s chief penitentiary official said.
“The Prosecutor General’s office notified us that the former president has fully served his sentence after his detention time before sentencing was counted as already served,” Hasan Suhagi said.
Mubarak was arrested in 2011, soon after being toppled in a popular uprising. In 2012, he was sentenced to life in jail for his alleged involvement in the killings of 846 demonstrators during the so-called Arab spring revolution. He spent the following years in custody and was cleared of murder charges in November 2014.
Last Saturday, the 87-year-old was sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling millions in public funds for renovating the presidential palace, alongside with his two sons.
