Amtrak Train Reportedly Exceeded 100 Miles Per Hour Before Derailment- NTSB

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday night, Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188, carrying 238 passengers and five crew members derailed and rolled onto its side. Mike Nutter confirmed the accident's death toll has reached six people.

Eight passengers aboard the train are in critical condition, Temple University Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Herbert Cushing stated in a press conference on Wednesday.

“There are eight people in critical condition,” Cushing said.

Cushing praised Temple University Hospital’s medical personnel for timely coming together to address the needs of the Amtrak accident victims.

“We are a level one trauma center, and are trained regularly for this,” Cushing noted. “We have drills every month.”

He has also said that the number of rib and head injuries in Tuesday’s Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia is surprisingly high.

“I was surprised at the number of rib and head problems,” Cushing said.

Cushing said he believes Temple University Hospital has gathered all the victims’ families, and that the eight victims in critical condition will likely survive their injuries.

He noted that the victims that are treated for injuries are from numerous countries in Europe and the Indian subcontinent.

“Spain, Belgium come to mind, Germany, India,” Cushing said.

The black box from the scene of the Amtrak train derailment has been earlier found and is being analyzed, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said on Wednesday.

The mayor also said that over 200 officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were involved in the search and rescue operation.

Philadelphia-area hospitals have received more than 200 patients since the Amtrak train headed for New York City crashed near Philadelphia on Tuesday night, Philadelphia Deputy Managing Director for Emergency Management Samantha Phillips said at a press conference on Wednesday.
