The UK Conservative Party’s plan to scrap the existing Human Rights Act would mean denouncing the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) initially drafted by British lawyers and leaving the Council of Europe founded by Winston Churchill, the European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and World Human Rights (ELDH) told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Conservatives, which secured the majority of seats in the House of Commons after the general election, have proposed scrapping the Human Rights Act, which incorporates rights under the European Convention on Human Rights into the UK domestic law, and replace it with a UK Bill of Rights.

UK Plans to Scrap Human Rights Act Would Make It an 'International Outlaw'
"It is a binding treaty obligation under the ECHR, and a condition of membership of the Council of Europe and of the European Union," ELDH President Bill Bowring said adding that his association is against the proposal that would give London the final say on human rights issues.

”I oppose them strongly,” Bowring told Sputnik.

The Human Rights Act was adopted by the Labour Party back in 1998. Under the act, the rights declared in the European Convention on Human Rights are incorporated into the British law, while the UK public bodies are obliged to observe these rights.
