MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, a French police watchdog launched an internal investigation after a video emerged showing police officers throwing migrants out from trucks and using tear gas.
"The situation with violence in Calais is very old and very well known. It is not violence to send people away from France; it is violence to be violent. This is what the exact video shows. Ejecting people from a truck is not useful."
She added that many of the undocumented migrants were arrested and put in detention centers, instead of being sent out of France, because the country's immigration services were understaffed and underfinanced.
Carrere also explained that migrants looked to reach the United Kingdom, Sweden of Finland hoping to ask for asylum in other countries than France.
"Some of them would like to ask for asylum, but nobody proposed that to them, and the asylum conditions in France are not very good: you don't get somewhere to stay, you do not get the right to work and too little money to survive."
Europe has recently witnessed an increased influx of immigrants as thousands flee conflicts and poverty in North Africa and the Middle East.
