WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Arizona senator reacted to Wednesday's presidential decree appointing him a member of the International Advisory Board to the Ukrainian leader, which would be headed by former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
"I was asked to do it both by Ukraine and Saakashvili and I said I would be inclined to do it, but I said I needed to look at all the nuances of it, whether it's legal under our ethics and all that kind of stuff."
The senator added that he "would love do anything" he can to help Ukraine but he needed to make sure that taking a consultative job in Kiev does not contradict the US Senate rules.
Earlier this year, Senator McCain said that he was "ashamed" of US President Barack Obama for not providing enough help to Ukraine amid the ongoing crisis in the country.
McCain, who chairs the US Senate Armed Services Committee, has called on the Obama administration to deliver weapons to Ukraine as Kiev forces carried out a military operation against the militia of the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk in the country's east.
