UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The efforts by Iraqi forces and the US-led coalition are not enough to eradicate the Islamic State militants from the territories the group had seized in Iraq, UN's envoy to Iraq Jan Kubis said Thursday.

"The Iraqi security forces (ISF), together with the Peshmerga, patriots of the Popular Mobilization Forces and Sunni tribal volunteers supported by the international coalition and countries of the region are making advances and liberating territory from ISIL. However, ISIL is far from being defeated and government gains remain at time fragile," Kubis told the UN Security Council.

Kubis added that vast areas of Iraq and millions of Iraqis remain under control and influence of the ISIL militants who continue to perpetrate human rights violations against the Iraqi people.

The UN envoy noted that up to 120,000 civilians were forced to flee the central Iraqi city of Ramadi due to recent airstrikes by the US-led international coalition currently fighting the IS terrorist group.

Kubis called on the Iraqi government to expedite its efforts to provide the necessary financial and material support to local anti-IS fighters and authorities, which should share responsibility for the country's liberation from the IS control.

The IS militant group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, controls large parts of Iraq and Syria.

The Iraqi army, Shia militias and the Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga are currently fighting the IS in Iraq with the backing of the US-led coalition.

Over 800 people were killed and more than 1,700 injured in acts of terrorism and violence in Iraq in April, according to UN estimates.
