WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The BJS study concluded that US police departments in larger jurisdictions were more diverse than smaller ones.
“About 130,000 minority local police officers were employed in 2013, an increase of about 78,000 since 1987,” the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced in the release.
The Justice Department also stated that the percentage of full-time female officers also increased more than two times since the 1980s.
“About 58,000 females were employed as local police officers in 2013, compared to about 27,000 in 1987,” the release read.
The minority groups included African-American, Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaska Native representatives, and persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, the release read.
