MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) President Joseph Blatter will attend the Copa America Centeriano football championship that will be held in the United States in 2016, despite claims that he had been avoiding an FBI investigation, the Eurosport reported Friday.
"I will be at the Copa Centenario if elected, and even if I'm not elected, I expect I will still be invited," Blatter told reporters as quoted by the Eurosport.
Earlier this week, a documentary by ESPN TV channel claimed that Blatter has been abstaining from visiting the United States in the past four years, to fears of facing an FBI interrogation.
The FBI is investigating allegations of corruption in FIFA, including payments of some $500,000 made by the Caribbean Football Union to an offshore company headed by a former top official of the authority.
Blatter said that he is not worried about the investigation, as it has nothing to do with him personally.
The Copa America Centeriano – the special event to celebrate the centenary of the Copa America — will involve 10 South American and six invited teams.
