The United States will close a long-established military facility in Stuttgart, Germany by end of 2015 and will return it to German jurisdiction, according to Department of Defense News.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The base, located in downtown Stuttgart, hosts the US Forces Liaison Office for the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, as well as the local administrative offices of contract guards for the US Army Garrison in Stuttgart.

"[T]he Department will fully return the US Army-Europe site in Stuttgart, Germany, to the host nation in 2015," the News reported on Friday.

Pentagon officials had identified the Stuttgart Administrative Facility as "excess to the needs of the US military in Europe."

The Pentagon had decided to close the facility after assuring German authorities the move would have no impact on US defense policies in their country.

USAG Stuttgart manages five installations in the Stuttgart area: Panzer Kaserne, Patch Barracks, Kelley Barracks, Robinson Barracks and Stuttgart Army Airfield.
