MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An Egyptian court on Saturday banned hardline football fan groups and labelled them terrorist organizations, local media reported.
According to Al Ahram newspaper citing judicial sources, a case against the so-called ultras groups was filed by the chairman of Zamalek football club, Mortada Mansour.
Ultras are known for violent clashes with police and authorities, as well as participation in 2011 anti-government protests that led to ouster of then-president Hosni Mubarak.
Egypt is known for violent clashes between supporters of different football teams, as well as the police.
In February 2012, Egypt's worst-ever football fan clash and stampede killed at least 72 people and injured more than 250.
Ultras were also involved in April 2013 clashes between police and protesters.
