MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Hundreds of thousands gathered in Istanbul on Sunday to support the country’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu less than a month before the general election, the Daily Sabah reported.
In the past days, Davutoglu has held a series of rallies across the country.
In his speech, Davutoglu focused on the progress the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has achieved in terms of living standards and economy.
Davutoglu pledged to continue working on strengthening the country's economy and advancing democracy.
The Turkish general election will be held on June 7, 2015. The ruling AK Party expects to gain 330 out of 550 seats in the Grand National Assembly to be able to submit constitutional changes to a referendum.
The AK Party’s major opponent in the upcoming election is the Republican People’s Party that currently holds 135 seats in the Turkish parliament against the ruling party’s 327.
