Washington’s willingness to deploy the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery on Korean soil has sparked concerns from China and Russia, Yonhap news agency reported.
"(The Seoul government) is reviewing whether THAAD will be helpful in beefing up our defense capabilities and boosting our effectiveness in military aspects," a senior official said, requesting anonymity.
The official added that Seoul still lacked knowledge about the system's specifications and had to review available materials on the Web and in the US Army’s manuals, the Yonhap report said.
As an integral part of the US-led missile-defense system, THAAD is designed to shoot down short, medium and intermediate ballistic missiles at a higher altitude in their terminal phase using a hit-to-kill method.
