Non-western perspective on global events and politics is gaining weight, an analyst with German Council on Foreign Relations think tank told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Anastasia Levchenko — The comments come following the release of an ICM Research poll earlier in the day, conducted exclusively for Sputnik, revealing that a total of 60 percent of European and US citizens were interested in receiving information on global events from alternative news outlets.

"Non-western perspectives are gaining influence and will be more important in the future because the non-western world is becoming more and more important," Christian Wipperfurth said.

Wipperfurth underscored that we live in the era of information wars.

"That was also the case 100 or 150 years ago, but now PR is even more important. How something is presented is getting more and more important, for selling cars as for selling politics," he said.

Wipperfurth added that in Germany the media are much more inclined for "information war" than the government.

As Russia's relations with the West worsened over the Ukrainian crisis, many US and European media outlets have adopted a one-sided approach to covering events in the conflict-torn country.

An earlier ICM poll, published in April, revealed that some 54 percent of respondents in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Greece did not trust mainstream media when it came to coverage of the Ukrainian crisis.
