MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The majority of French population will voice opposition to the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) EU-US deal, French right-wing National Front party’s youth movement (FNJ) head told Sputnik France on Tuesday.
“Since it [TTIP] concerns such important for our democracy concepts as health, environment and resources, the majority of the population — the workers, state officials, pensioners, the unemployed, young or old people — will oppose this treaty,” Gaetan Dussausaye stated.
The planned free trade deal has sparked much controversy in Europe, with thousands-strong protests taking place in several EU member states over the last few months. The opponents of the agreement say it will grant corporations too much access to the lawmaking process.
The outcomes of a referendum on the signing of the deal would have revealed that the French population is against the TTIP, Dussausaye told Sputnik.
“If France’s political elites could have organized a true nationwide referendum on Transatlantic Partnership, I am sure that the opinion 'against' would have won in a landslide,” Dussausaye emphasized.
In Europe, over 1.7 million people signed a petition against the TTIP and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) – a similar treaty the European Union is discussing with Canada.
