MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Lebanon's armed forces started on Tuesday shelling positions of the Islamic State (ISIL) and the Nusra front militant groups, which are fighting each other on the Syrian border, local media reported.

The army shelled the Islamist groups' hideouts in the outskirts of the Lebanese town of Arsal bordering Syria, the Daily Star newspaper reported citing a security source.

The extremists have been engaged in clashes in the area since Monday, according to the source.

In August 2014, violent clashes between Lebanese forces and the two militant groups broke out in Arsal, with extremists capturing some 30 Lebanese servicemen.
