NEW YORK (Sputnik) — Law enforcement authorities in New York City seized 70 kilograms of heroin whose value is estimated at more than $50 million, New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan said in a statement.
“To put it in perspective, this load was so large it carried the potential of supplying a dose of heroin to every man, woman and child in New York City,” Brennan said on Tuesday.
“Investigators believe the heroin was intended for distribution in Connecticut and points north, where the drug’s street value is at least double its street value in New York City,” the US Drug Enforcement Agency New York Office said.
The drug bust was executed after an investigation that lasted six months. Numerous weapons, cocaine and hundreds of ecstasy pills were also seized.
The authorities announced first-degree conspiracy charges against Guillermo Estaban Margarin and Edualin Tapia for operating a drug distribution ring stretching from Mexico to Road Island.
The two defendants are currently in custody and in Hartford, Connecticut pending extradition proceedings, according to law enforcement authorities.
