Until now Palestinians have been able to enter and exit Israel through a variety of checkpoints, but the new scheme means that some workers will be forced to use the same point for both. This could extend the travel times by hours.
Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon, who is behind the decision, told Israeli radio that he believed this would grant "more control over Palestinians coming in and out of Israel and reduce security risks."
Jewish settlers on the West Bank had been lobbying for the measure for several tears.
