MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Test flights of the Russian Takhion drones have begun on the Kuril Islands in Russia's Far East, the Eastern Military District press secretary said Wednesday.
"During the first flights, with the help of Takhion, specialists practice aerial monitoring for mechanized infantry and tank troops as part of military training," Col. Alexander Gordeyev said.
According to Gordeyev, the drones will be used for monitoring the territory of the islands.
The Takhion drones have been designed to operate in harsh weather conditions, endure a wide range of temperatures, and operate well in strong winds.
The forces of the Eastern Military District started receiving the Takhion drones at the end of 2014.
In March, Takhion drones were put into service with Russian Central Military District reconnaissance units in Siberia.
