A suspect who had stolen money from an account of a passenger of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that had disappeared last year, was sentenced Wednesday to four years in jail and three strokes with a cane, Malaysian newspaper The Star said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In April, Malaysian mechanic Basheer Ahmad Maula Sahul Hameed pleaded guilty to stealing about $2,000 from an account of a Chinese citizen who was a flight MH370 passenger.

Basheer's wife, Nur Shila Kanan, an HSBC bank employee, acted as his accomplice. She is accused of illegal transfers and withdrawals of about $23,000 from passengers' accounts. As Nur Shila was absent during the court's hearing due to sick leave, and the judge has yet to issue a sentence.

The HSBC returned the money to the account owners' families, while the embezzlers' accounts were blocked.
