ALMATY (Sputnik) – Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana will host the next round of Syrian opposition talks next week, Kazakh Foreign Minister Erlan Idrissov said Thursday.
“It is expected that Syrian opposition negotiations will be held in Astana next week,” Idrissov was quoted as saying on the Foreign Ministry’s Twitter account.
The UN estimates that hostilities in the civil war have claimed more than 220,000 lives and forced millions to flee their homes.
In January and April 2015, Moscow hosted two rounds of Syrian reconciliation talks that saw opposition negotiators agree on a 10-point agenda, defining a negotiating framework for future talks.
On May 4 a fresh round of consultations on Syria started in Geneva. The talks are expected to last for up to six weeks.
