Swedish fighter jets have reportedly been scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea close to the Swedish border.

Sweden scrambled fighter jets to intercept two Russian bombers that flew "provocatively close" to the southern Swedish island of Öland on Thursday, according to local media outlets.

The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, in turn, identified both Russian planes as Tupolev Tu-22M bombers.

These aircraft are capable of carrying both nuclear weapons and conventional bombs on board, and are also used for surveillance purposes.
