Commuter Train Fire Forces Evacuation of 1,200 in St. Petersburg
11:33 GMT 23.05.2015 (Updated: 11:35 GMT 23.05.2015) Rescue workers in St. Petersburg safely evacuated nearly 1,200 passengers from a commuter train on its way to Luga after one of its railcars caught fire, the St. Peterburg central press office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reports.
According to the Ministry, the second car of the suburban electric passenger train caught fire near the station 'Airport' while on its way to the city of Luga, about 100 km south of St. Petersburg. Firefighters received the call at 11:15 am, and arrived at the scene shortly thereafter, evacuating the train's passengers and putting out the fire by about 11:35.
Following security checks, the train began moving again shortly after noon. Some of the passengers returned to St. Petersburg, with officials organizing emergency transportation. Others are reported to have continued on to their destinations south of the city. The cause of the fire is yet to be revealed.
