Peru Orders Troops Into Mining Region After Pro-Farmer Protests
Peru's government has declared a state of emergency in the south of the country as a result of protests against a US-based mining company's project, which protesters say will damage local agriculture.
Peru suspended civil liberties and ordered the army to support police in the south of the country after violent anti-mining protests led to the deaths of three protesters and a police officer.
The protesters are demonstrating against a new copper mining project by US-based Newmont Mining Corporation. Protesters are concerned that the new open-pit mine project will pollute local streams and damage crops.
