MOSCOW (Sputnik) — French filmmaker Jacques Audiard was awarded the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, organizers said Sunday via the festival's official Twitter account.

The 63-year-old director collected the Palme d'Or award for "Dheepan," a drama film about a former Sri Lankan insurgent arriving in Paris in search of a better life.

Audiard also claimed the Grand Prix, the second-best prestigious award of the Cannes Festival, in 2009 for his "A Prophet" prison drama.

This year, the jury, chaired by US sibling directors Joel and Ethan Coen, awarded the Grand Prix to Hungary's Laszlo Nemes for his debut feature "Son of Saul."
