MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier on Wednesday, seven FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich, Switzerland, on a US warrant for federal corruption charges, that include wire fraud, racketeering and taking part in a money laundering scheme that lasted for 24 years. The officials are suspected of receiving over $150 million in bribes.
“The members of the UEFA Executive Committee are convinced that there is a strong need for a change to the leadership of this FIFA and strongly believe that the FIFA Congress should be postponed, with new FIFA presidential elections to be organised within the next six months,” Infantino said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
The 65th FIFA Congress was scheduled to take place in Zurich on Thursday and Friday. Only two nominees – the current FIFA president Sepp Blatter and the current FIFA Vice President for Asia, Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan – are running for the FIFA presidency. Blatter has served as the eighth President of FIFA since June 1998.
